Two rival groups face off on a Philippine street at sunset

BAKBAKAN®

The Digital Home of the Filipino Game of the Generals

Every rivalry deserves a better arena — a homegrown Filipino strategy sport, reborn for the phone in every pocket.

EXHIBIT A — THE FILM

A street stand‑off, settled on the board.

Two crews. A tense face‑off on a street corner. It builds like it's headed somewhere bad — then it doesn't. They sit down, phones out, and settle it in BAKBAKAN instead. That's the whole pitch, told in fourteen seconds.

EXHIBIT B — ORIGIN

A Filipino game, reborn.

Game of the Generals — Salpakan — was invented in the Philippines in 1970 by Sofronio H. Pasola Jr., who built it for his daughter after she asked for something with the depth of chess but simple enough for anyone to pick up. For more than five decades it has quietly lived in classrooms, barangay halls, and family gatherings — a homegrown Filipino invention that never got the spotlight it deserved.

Each Commander fields 21 pieces in secret — ranked from a Five‑Star General down to a Private, plus two Spies and the Flag. Neither side knows the other's ranks until two pieces meet in combat.

Higher rank wins on contact — except the Spy, who fells any officer but falls to the lowly Private. Capture the enemy Flag, or march your own safely across the board, and you win. Equal parts memory, nerve, and quiet bluffing — chess's clever, more accessible cousin, and entirely Filipino in origin.
