Is This the Official Electric Jeep?
One of the concerns about the Jeepney Modernization Program is the cost of acquiring an electric jeep. Based on earlier discussions, these modern jeepneys can cost as much as Php 3 million, which is out of reach for most operators. Francisco Motors, one of the major jeepney manufacturers in the Philippines, said they can produce an electric jeep for under Php 1 million.

This was confirmed by Francisco Motors owner Elmer Francisco in an interview with DZMM Teleradyo. To be specific, Francisco said the cost for the first 1,000 units of their proposed electric jeep is Php 985,000. That is significantly more affordable than previously proposed modern jeeps. Aside from the more accessible pricing, Francisco Motors’ electric jeep retains the same design elements of the traditional jeepney Filipinos are familiar with–the difference being its use of an electric powertrain.

All of these electric jeeps can seat up to 22 people and will have air conditioning. It will also have a built-in ramp to accommodate PWD commuters. To lower production costs, Francisco explained that their electric jeeps will be made entirely in the Philippines and that all of the parts that will be used–including the battery and electric motor–will be sourced locally as well. For the production of these electric jeeps, Francisco said that they will be built at a Special Economic Zone in Caramines Norte. Should they push through with full operations, Francisco said they can produce as many as 25,000 jeeps per year.
